Malaya Command HQ (11/2/42)

February 11, 1942February 11, 2017

To the Docks to see Doris then back to Fort Canning.

Back to the docks to say last au revoirs to Doris on board the “Empire Star”. Hellish parting like this, but at least she has the chance of going away to safety.

Richardson did not feel at all brave about coming back to Fort Canning.

Empire Star was in last convoy to leave Singapore which reached Perth, Western Australia, March 1942. It was heavily bombed in Singapore harbour the evening it left.

Mass migration of Asiatics out of Singapore. Very sad scenes of thousands of men, women and children, with their possessions, heading eastwards out of Singapore.

Altogether a most unpleasant day relieved only by reports (subsequently found to be false) that the Americans have landed at Port Swettenham and Penang.
