Gelugor, Penang Island

Billeted at Glugor (Gelugor). Under the command of the Commander, Penang Fortress, the initial role given to the Company was that of mobile reserve with the particular tasks of rounding up enemy paratroopers, and re-inforcement of any point of the Island which might be in danger of attack.

A heavy air raid in Georgetown’s Chinese quarter. At 13.00hrs orders were received to man the southern beaches. “E” Company Straights Settlement Volunteer Force (SSVF), under the command of Capt MacEvoy, was placed under the command of the Independent Company.

HQ Independent Company was established at Bayan Lepas and was in touch with a Sqn 3 Cavalry who were in charge of guarding the local aerodrome.

The 12th and 13th passed quietly.
